    What is a ICHTHUS?

True believers in Christ often display a fish symbol (Ichthus fish symbol) on their cars. Today it is used to let others know they believe in Jesus. What is amazing is that very few know how it begun to represent faith in our Lord and Savior. Really there is more to the story behind its use in biblical times. According to several Bible commentaries, some in the early New Testament church used the Ichthus Symbol. It was used as a secret reference code or cipher for Jesus Freaks. This correlation apparently led to the creation of an easy-to-draw shape as a profession of faith. In order to prevent unnecessary capture & persecution, Christians would often draw an ichthus in the dirt or on the walls of caves to let another Christian know that he too was a fellow believer. This symbol would let you know that it was safe to talk about their faith without the fear of being arrested. The story goes for example one complete stranger at the well would take a stick and draw half the fish. If the person next to him would draw the other half to complete the fish design then is would be okay to talk about Jesus.

    Fish we cool back then

In Biblical times the association of fish and Christianity began with the Greek word ichthus (or ichthys, Strong's Concordance). Translated twenty times in the New Testament as "fish". This association is not surprising because at least half of the twelve disciples of Jesus were fishermen. This way of life included James and John (who were brothers). Peter and Andrew (also brothers). Thomas and Nathanael (see Matthew 4:21 - 22, John 21:1 - 3, etc.). In fact, five out of the first six disciples called to be a special witness of our Savior's ministry were fishermen. Additionally, it was Christ Himself who told Peter and Andrew that instead of catching fish (ichthus) He would train them to "catch" men. (an allusion to the preaching of the gospel and the conversions it would bring, see Matthew 4:19, 13:47 - 48, Mark 1:17)
