Ready For Some Football

Ready For Some Football… I know I am!  Football, Back to School are an unspoken American traditions that we all can enjoy.  Football Night in America starts officially this week, but High school and College have already begun their seasons.  For some, football is a way of life.  To others its a way to share their faith with non believers through football.  Football is a passion that transcends race and religion and brings people together.�

I have been to many professional, college, and high school football games.  I even played Pee Wee football in elementary school.  The game is always the same.  No matter what level you play or watch.  I grew up admiring Jim Brown, Rodger Stauhbach, Tony Dorset and Vince Lombardi.  I knew first hand how hard it is to play organized football and to prepare as an athlete.  It takes hard work and dedication both mentally and physically. 

But my faith in Christ would help me be the best I could be.�Vince Lombardi said it best when he said “Football is like life — it requires perseverance, self-denial, hard work, sacrifice, dedication and respect for authority.”�Which reminds me of the bible passage in Proverbs 14:23 that reads “All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty.”

When you think about this sport, just a handful of guys become great.  I wasn’t athletic enough to go on to high school football. Some make it to the NFL on pure athletic ability, and that can only get you so far.  I really like this quote from Vince Lombardi “A man can be as great as he wants to be. If you believe in yourself and have the courage, the determination, the dedication, the competitive drive and if you are willing to sacrifice the little things in life and pay the price for the things that are worthwhile, it can be done.”  This can apply not only to any sport but also to our personal lives as well. Doesn’t this remind you of Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me“?
